I have a 2002 coupe with the self dimming mirror. The mirror was removed for me by a local auto glass company so I could send it in for installation of new LED bulbs for the map lights. When I got the mirror back, the lights won’t work, and the self dimming feature will not work either. The only light that works is the small amber light that illuminates the shifter area. I replaced the #2 and # 21 fuses and still nothing. I ordered a replacement mirror, (used) and same results.
I don’t have a multimeter to check the plug pins, (ordered one today) but could it be the plug? Does anyone know if the wiring goes down the passenger A pillar? I don’t know how just pulling the plug on the mirror could have caused this problem.
Any suggestions would be most helpful. Thanks in advance for any helpful information.
Check the polarity of the LED replacement bulbs. LED lamps as opposed to incandescent lamps only light with current flowing in one direction.
Simply reverse the LEDs and see if they light.
In addition to what epimetheus said (very good point), only other obvious check is to see if power is coming out of the pigtail at the mirror.
also, and just a separate point -- if you get it fixed, and want more functionality, there are a ton of great options out there-- I'm running rear view with modern dimming tech, amber LEDs (so you don't get blinded -- the LEDS back then were literally the first gen white leds and were super harsh), and three- button homelink. The same manufacturer I bought from also makes a version with all that + a reverse camera secreen in one of the corners, and I belive they make pigtails to interface with the stock wire.

Unfortunately, this is not the type of mirror that one can just remove the bulb covers and replace the bulbs. It must be disassembled to replace the bulbs … that’s why I sent it to a guy who does this service, (Like the “Abs-fixer” guy)
As I noted in my original post, the only thing that works is the amber bulb that illuminates the shift console. Thanks anyway. 😊
Sorry, I thought you were having trouble with the OEM mirror and DYI installing LEDs into it.
Looked into the circuit diagrams for the Interior Lights on the PDF file of my 1998 electrical schematics.
Unfortunately on this home computer I do not have Adobe Professional to be able to cut and paste that single page (page 26) into this reply.
If you are interested, I could send the whole schematic file (~7Mb) to you via e-mail.
The diagram indicates two orange (+) wires entering the rear view mirror:
One (Pin A) from Courtesy Lamp Micro-Relay #42 is energized by the BCM when the doors are open and illuminates the map/courtesy lamps even with the mirror switch in the OFF position.
The second (Pin B) is a Monitored Load sourced from Monitored Load Micro-Relay #43 and feeds the Sunvisor Vanity Lights as well as the On/OFF Switch for the map/courtesy lamps in the rear view mirror. This source illuminates the lights when you manually turn them on at the switch.
The splice point (S200) for these three elements (2 visors and mirror) is located near the rear view mirror breakout point under the vinyl covered windshield interior cowling.
The third (Pin C) is black and is the Common Ground (-) path for all three lights in the rear view mirror - the left map/courtesy, the right map/courtesy, and the little orange LED that illuminates and shines down on the console.
The fourth (Pin D) is a Brown wire and is the power (+) for the little orange LED that illuminates and shines down on the console. It is sourced from the Instrument Panel Illumination circuit. I have not checked, but it may dim with the instrument panel dimmer, left of the tachometer/speedometer.
I hope that this helps you troubleshoot you mirror and lamps circuits to successful operation.

Reason: Added more information from 1998 schematic
Thanks for this info. However, I have the self-dimming mirror that has the map lights, and also dims the driver side outside mirror. The mirror has seven pins. I have power at two pins … three pins have no power and one, of course is the ground. I will check the mini relays. Thanks.
FYI i had a problem with my map lights not working on my rear view mirror, but also the visor mirror lights weren't either. I pulled the relays that were associated via the comment from above 42 and 43. I thought i checked all the fuses, but was only looking at what i thought were applicable descriptions, turned out #2 fuse in the passenger fuse box (at feet) labeled ' monitored inadvertent load control' was blown, and when i replaced it those lights started working. another problem which may not be solved is i removed the entire fuse box during my troubleshooting and one of the wires to the relays must be slightly loose bc the courtesy lights flickered. anyway just wanted to point out the #2 fuse and how it controls these lights despite not having a very good label/title
I have found the issue with my lack of map lights (and visor vanity mirror lights) on my self dimming mirror. I found a fuse that looked okay to actually be bad. I believe it was fuse #10 that I replaced even though I thought it was good. After I replaced that one and fuse #2, all is well. Thanks to everyone who chimed in to help me with this issue!
