Several months ago I started to get a whining noise from the area of the alternator. It's much worse in the cold weather but I also hear it in the warm weather. In the warmer months, after about 15 minutes of driving the
sound completely goes away. I purchased a new belt and also a new drive belt idler pulley. Is it likely that is the cause of the whining noise though?? Thanks!
Is it the power steering pump? If it's only when cold, maybe there's an old seal that's drawing some air into the pump. When it warms up the seal becomes more flexible and does it's job properly. My wife's Honda does this in the winter. The seal is old on the PS pump intake side and draws a little air in, causing the pump to whine. (I told her "now you know what if feels like to hear her whine all the time")
