MAF no screen, wrong spark plugs?

MAF no screen, wrong spark plugs?
Doing some maintenance on my new to me 13k mile ‘03 Z06. MAF sensor has no screen, is that normal or removed for some reason? The spark plugs were 41-974 gapped at .054. Is there any reason for that plug and gap? Replaced with 41-962 at .040, may be wishful thinking but it seems to run better.

No, 41-962, double platinum. I ordered 41-162 (iridium) but NAPA gave me 41-962 instead and I didn’t check the box until after I had already installed the plugs. GM Parts.com says both are correct, not sure which is better.
Not sure why the PO put 41-974 in. They are a hotter plug. The only reference I could find to them was a 7 year old LS 1 Firebird forum post.
