Default Tire question for the experts

I was gifted 18” rims and wanted to know if a 255/40/18 in the front will work with the existing original tire size 275/40/18? Once I wear out the rear tires I will go to my preferred sizes 275/35/18 front and 295/35/18 rear ……. Just short on cash and also the rear tires are only a year old …. Any information will be greatly appreciated 👍🇺🇸

As long as rear tire diameter is at least .75" greater you should be good.

As long as the front tires aren't taller than the rears, you shouldn't have any issues with the AH/TC.
255/40/18 = 26.1" tall
275/40/18 = 26.7" tall

I'm here to tell you that this must vary from car to car, or it is simply not true. I dont know which, but I do know that I ran Michelin 315-30-18 PS2s on the rear for many years, while running the stock 245-45-17s on the front. The rears measured just 25.44" diameter, while the fronts were slightly LARGER at 25.68"! I never had any AH/TC issues. Even when reducing the air pressure in the rears to 16lbs-20lbs looking for some extra traction at the strip, which would've made the rears even smaller. I also put 40lbs in the front tires to try for reduced rolling resistance, which would've made them slightly larger. My experiences, YMMV......

First off, the AH/TC system on C5's is not sensitive, at all. Lots of people are running square set-ups, without issues. Your experience doesn't surprise me because the diameter differences are so small but my first C5 didn't even like a square set-up.
Strangely enough, these cars don't seem to care when the rear tires are substantially larger.
