Default Hey Engine Mechanics......

I am planning doing a cam/head swap on my LS1 next Summer. And in reading/viewing/researching have seen this timing cover alignment tool.
In looking for one have seen under $20 ones and then the Mr, Gasket one for $50-$65. Is this one of those, "you get what you pay for" examples or what??
I assume if I am going to replace the lifers, I would not need the lifter dowel rods.....is this correct??

I am still searching for valuable information on doing this cam/head swap with the engine in....so if anyone has a particular good one....let me know.
I did find the C5 Heads/Cam Swap on LS1howto.com.

Thanks

Ive used an inexpensive timing cover tool with great success. Another acceptable way to center the timing cover is to leave the TC bolts loose, press on the balancer, and then tighten the TC to spec.

If you're pulling the lifters, you won't need any dowels.

The guide on LS1Howto is still king.

I have rebuilt engines in my past, just not an LS.
I used the "leave TC loose, install balancer, tighten TC bolts" in the past.

Regarding the LS1HowTo.com comment....yeah....always be mindful of what one reads.

Thanks for the replies.

I found a close-up picture of the timing cover to oil pan joint with the engine in the car. All I had seen was an engine on a stand, upside down, then the timing cover installed, and then using a straight edge to check the timing cover to oil pan for level. Not something that could be done with the engine in the car.
So anyways, now that concern has been addressed.

Prop Joe: yep after looking through most of your thread, I will be doing pretty much the same. I just want to have LS6 power in my Vert. Not wanting to get crazy or putting a supercharge on it , just want to have 405+hp.
I want it completely street'able, reliable, etc and I want to get 100k miles out it.
Like you will likely go with 243 heads unless I can find others that are about the same cost. Probably same cam, and valve train components.
Pulling info and part numbers out of your thread.....THANK YOU...
