Has anyone ever changed the balancer on a 1998 automatic engine? I bought a new balancer cause my belt keeps jumping about 1/2" off and the balancer has a wobble to it. Thanks.
its a lot of work, the biggest deal is removing the steering rack to get at the pulley, and you need agood puller to get it off and installer to put back on.
A buddy and I swapped out our stock pulleys for underdrive versions while doing our heads/cam jobs. It's quite a bit of work to get to the pulley. Look at jmX's how-to site on the C5 heads/cam page. Ignore the heads/cam swap portions. The procedure shows you how to get to the pulley to change it. http://www.ls1howto.com/
I have a good take off in anyone needs it. I agree, getting the steering out of the way is a pain. We actually move it to the side, then jack the engine slightly. Make sure you re-install by the book, or you could have slippage problems.
also, you may as well key the crank while you've gone that far. your biggest challenge will be getting 240lb/ft of torque on a new crank bolt because of the challenge of keeping the engine from turning. it doesnt help that you have an auto tranny, either...no way to lock the engine in place to put the torque on the bolt. at least, not without a flywheel vise plier. keying the crank will be added insurance.
