Re: I need Torque Converter advice...please..... (2000^C5)
BUCK,
I think you are good to go with what you have for know with the sy 3500. Your new mod is going to be making a TON OF TORQUE down low and the sy 3500 may give you the best of both worlds for a car which will probably see more action on the streets than the drags. Now if you were going to bolt on some Hoosier slicks and go the track regularly, then an upgrade may be in order but for know, i think your perfect and i would see how your set up meets your fancy b/f you going spending more hard earned $.
Sy 3500 and big cubes along with 3.42 will be a SMOKIN SET UP in my honest opinon.

Itsnt it true that the more power you put down the looser the tc will be? So it stalls to 3500 now it might go to 3700~3800.I had my tc built with nitrous in mind and I didnt want it to loose. I am using a 3500 with a 2.5str and can smoke the tires pretty easily.

:iagree:
Unless you plan on using Hoosiers at the track, keep what you have. After your new setup is installed and you take it to the track and aren't happy with it, then try a new converter.

That is great advice with your added power the SY3500 might be just right for you. Try it first before spending money on a new converter. I have an ST3500 and 3.73s and first gear is useless with street tires. If you don't plan of buying et streets stick with your SY3500, with your added torque it will stall higher than 3500 RPM anyway.
Re: I need Torque Converter advice...please..... (Buckmaster)
With a higher STR and the new design of the SS series TC's it will remain tighter feeling and give me that extra jump off the line.
You'll only realize that extra jump if you have the tire for it. A tight converter and all that torque will make a high STR converter "challenging" for street racing. If you don't do that, then no problem.
I DO plan on doing much more racing this Summer. As much as I can at least :D That said, I am probably going to be buying the CCW drag set-up sometime in the near future. I also understand that the street manners and driveability of the new SS series TC's is great which is very important to me. I will not race the car every weekend but will race it nonetheless.
I say go for the converter if low ETs are important to you. I'm a big fan of low stall, tight converter, monster torque setups for a street car since they are just so much fun. You may not ET as low as you could with a higher stall converter, but you can still have tons of fun bracket racing. I guess it all comes down to what kind of racing do you want to optimize for.
Re: I need Torque Converter advice...please..... (Buckmaster)
I'm wondering though if the SS3800 is truely a 3800 rpm stall? Sometimes this isn't the case with TC's. ...Phillip
Trust me ..they don't call it YANK for nothin'...I stage at 2200 rpm and nail it on the third yellow and ......I'm Gone!! You are literally YANKED off the line and it doesn't stop until you cross the traps..Damn it pulls! :smash:
Re: I need Torque Converter advice...please..... (vstella)
Buckmaster,
It is the indecisive Bandit here. I actually made up my mind I am just waiting to hear news on a new job before I pull the trigger on a bunch of mods I have lined up (3.42's/SY3500/B&M, then later a TR 224 Cam, ASP Pully, LT Headers) .
I have the 3.42's sitiing around and trying to determine which TC to match them with. I was almost going to go ahead and get the SS3600 or ST3500, but since I will likely be on the street most of the time I thought that the SS3600 would likely be wayyy toooo much converter for me to actually enjoy on a daily basis.
If I knew I was going to bolt up ET Streets and go to the track regularly, then I woul do it. I also thought about running Nitto 555's in the front and the
NEW 18" Nittos DR's when they come out, ALL THE TIME!! Mine isn't a daily driver anyway so I could do it. Then that SS3600 might work in that situation and might be a lot of fun....:yesnod: .
I am pretty much sold on the SY3500 for my applications and I really hope that it will be enough of a kick in the pats for me off the line and I will not regret it.
In your situation, from what you said, going to the drags all the time, then I say go ahead and do it!!!!!! However, If you know that isn't going to be the case I would maybe talk to Mike at YANK and get his feedback 1st.
I remember getting an e-mail from a buddy on the Forum where Mike e-mailed him back and said you will not hook up at the track with the new SS3800 unless you have ET Streets, not DR's, but ET Streets!!!
They are a must, especially with a 2.6 STR of the SS3800.
Good Luck Keith.......... I would consider buying your SY3500 if you take it off , but with your heavy right foot, I might just get a new one :D :D :D
The Bandit...............

Re: I need Torque Converter advice...please..... (Phil97SVT)
Just a heads up. The SS series has only been out a short time. Just in case nobody here reads LS1tech, there were a bunch of people having issues with the Yank F-body ST series. Such as problems locking up, shuddering, etc.. So don't just jump on the SS bandwagon just yet, I'd wait till it's proven first.
This isn't bashing Yank or anything. I'm more than happy with my SY3500!
Re: I need Torque Converter advice...please..... (2001 Red Coupe Bandit)
Sounds like the SS3800 would be what the Dr. ordered for me. If that converter had been around a years ago, I would have pulled the trigger on it. Although I have a one time best of 1.66 60' from the ST-3500, I really can't complain. The 3800 stall just might get me another tenth in Cali. Remember no roll bar please! :yesnod: The combination of the ST-3500 and the 3.73's are one of the best kept secrets around, especially with a cam and tuning. I am still driving on EMTS around town with no problem.
Re: I need Torque Converter advice...please..... (Buckmaster)
Wall Street, the 3.73's and ST3500 on EMT's is of course possible, but you do not drive your car hard on the street from what I read in your posts. Yes it can be driven easily when just driving normally, but for the majority that drive hard mainly on the street (not saying I am speed racer, but I like to push the gas to the floor from time to time and I am mostly doing so on a street, not a track) , the ST3500 and 3.73's would just spin all the time on EMT's or non dr's and if you were to race a SY3500 with 3.73's from a dead stop on EMT's, I bet the SY3500 (on the street) would win.....
I wish I lived by you Al as I would love a ride in your car to see what that combo feels like. Who knows, maybe I would be surprised how srtreetable it is? I was in Topless Texans non-cammed car with 3.73's and SY3500 and it was very traction limmited at hard throttle as it was.
Buckmaster, thanks for the reassurance!! I already told you my opinions, but my curious side would really like you to get the SS3800 and maybe we will all be surprised how Bad Azz it is..................................
The Bandit.............. :D :D :D
