Engine Tick Diagnosis
Here are my symptoms:
Tick is audible from idle to about 2,500 RPM. Then you can't hear it above 2500 RPM.
Tick doesnt go away when the car is at operating temperature.
I've used an automotive stethoscope, the tick is loudest when i probe the passenger side rear side of the exhaust manifold and head. Quietest when i probe the bottom of the block. But it also sounds loud when i probe the injectors.
Car has a very small misfire at idle, just changed spark plugs about 3k miles ago.
My next stage in Diagnosis is to do a compression test, while i have the spark plugs out, double checking the gaps.
After the compression test i plan on pulling the valve cover and checking each spring, rocker, push rods, for any excessive freeplay as i turn the crank.
Any suggestion if there is anything else i can check before pulling the heads and pulling the lifters?
Has anyone with lifter tick, replaced there lifters and removed the ticking sound?
