I have seen many people mention that they put a hood seal on when they installed the Blackwing (I'm guessing for fear of water getting in the intake). Anyone have an opinion on this? Are there any other benefits/downsides to the hood seal? Help is appreciated.
I never did get much water on my Blackwing during or after washing. The primary benefit of the hood seal for me is less dirt on the engine. It does work for that!!
I haven't really decided yet if it helps, but it was only like 10 bucks. You can also just buy some rubber weather strip at Home Depot, etc. Also, many vendors are including a hood seal with the purchase of an intake. I figure it can't hurt, so I put on one. :seeya
Mine came with the BW as part of a GP. I can't comment on the before aspect of preventing water from getting in but I can say that it does keep the engine bay a little cleaner.

Thanks for asking this question.
I've read some on the hood seal thing & wondered about the very matter, myself.
Given the excellent responses, I need not wonder any more. :chevy
If nothing else, it keeps the engine compartment cleaner. I imagine it must keep water out as well.
:iagree:
Ya gotta be careful with what you use & how you install, though, because it can "preload" your hood & raise it up at the leading edge.
Being "****", I pulled mine off & reset it about three times before I was completely satisfied...
IMHO, this is a wonderful triumph of marketing over common sense. Remember, the standard air intake is in the same place as the BW yet you don't need a "performance hood seal" with that. Other replacement air filters don't prereq a hood seal either. Also, out of curiosity, I ran an experiment for several weeks where I tried to see if water would find its way from the seam (without a hood seal) to the top of the air filter; it didn't. Also, if a hood seal were truly needed, it's really curious how GM could do such a good job on the Cd and miss such an obvious thing. Nah -- I'll pass.
We've been offering specials with the hood seal and Blackwing from some time now. We inlcuded it as it does keep a cleaner engine bay and keeps water out of that are during rain or while washing. Looks factory too. Don't expect any hp gain with it though.
We offer the combo at around 200 bucks or so, shipped free in the continental US, depending on year of car.:)
