So there is a bracket that holds the shift control cable to the transmission. Are you saying yours is missing?
I wanted to do this but the C5 shift cables' total length is short, marine shift cables for example have long solid ends as seen here, https://www.go2marine.com/shop-all-c...control-cables. No aftermarket shift cable companies such as Lokar sell one to fit a C5. Have you changed the bushing at the cable end? The bushings in my '98 are original and have never popped off however I made a retainer that clamps onto the transmission shift arm. If the bushing ever fails the cable end cannot pop off, the shifting would be sloppy but the car won't be stranded somewhere. Here's what it looks like:
