Reading on here, it would APPEAR that the re ring problem has changed from going through the dreaded oil consumption test, to having proof of burning oil, as in exhaust tips, dirty azz bumper, or a video  of the car puffin smoke (I have one of those :D ) and the re ring will be done??
Re: Re Ring TSB...new or the same one (Ram Air Tony)
RAT, my rings were done in Dec.2002, the local dealer made me do a full 3000 mile consumption test, starting with them changing the oiland 3 seperate oil level readings at 1000 miles each. I passed or failed however you look at it and then they still had to call GM corporate to get approval.
I think it depends on the shop to a large degree. My dealer said if he just started doing it without a test, GM might not reimburse him for the warranty work.
I will have to some more research on this
I hope I dont have to do the consumption test cuz I dont drive the car THAT much and it would take like a year to, which would mean the car would be out of warranty (3 year 36K miles ..... 11-7-00 in service date)
Re: Re Ring TSB...new or the same one (Ram Air Tony)
Tony,
The drill you go through varies greatly depending on which dealer you go to. I found one that knew how to cut through the tape and get it taken care of. If you want to cross the Red River to get it done, PM me and I'll get you connected.
You may want to try a couple of things before you resort to the ring treatment:
1) Get a new pcv valve. They have re-designed these, and the older ones were a problem on some cars. Remove your pcv valve and check it for oil. Some have reported that oil actually poured out of it.
2) Have your intake inspected for a leaking intake valley seal. Just remove the air bridge from the throttle body and check out the intake floor. If oil is pooled in there, this may be the fix.
Your dealer should do both of these under warranty - in fact the valley inspection is part of the TSB. If those take care of it, it's beats going into the engine, IMHO.
Re: Re Ring TSB...new or the same one (Ram Air Tony)
i walked in last week right before my warranty expired got a call the next day saying they were replacing the rings and that gm issued a bulletin and that it was very common w/ the six speeds. he said he has done about 15 of them.
Re: Re Ring TSB...new or the same one (Ram Air Tony)
Ram Air Tony,
I took my C5 to the dealer, told them about the oil usage and sooty black exhaust tips. The dealer had me bring the car in for the ring fix and four days later I had it back. No consumption test, no arguments.

Good luck...
now THAT is exactly what I want done....time to call my service writer!!!!!!!!
Re: Re Ring TSB...new or the same one (Ram Air Tony)
RAT, once the problem is diagnosed prior to your warranty being up, the dealership will make good on it.
In fact, if you have had a persistant problem that GM Mechs using the famous "dartboard" method of 'vette repair fail to find the cure-but finally figure out what the problem was after the warranty is up, they still have to make good.
Re: Re Ring TSB...new or the same one (Ram Air Tony)
RAT, I am sure the reason that my dealer made me do the fullest scenario of oil consumption tests is because I asked him right away, before any test, if he would istall all my MODS during the re-ring.
I am sure he started thinking that maybe I just wanted my mods installed almost for free and the warranty re-ring was a great way to get them installed for free.
The oil test took over a month, I got to know my service advisor, he got to know and trust me, and finally he did believe me that the car used the oil. I mean you could see all over the chrome tips!
You know anyone could just drain or suck a QT out of the engine to make it look like it was using oil, so there is the possibility of fraud.
Also I didn't buy my car there! And I was asked about that. Why not take it back where you got it. Well I traveled 220 miles to an out of state dealer is why.
I don't think a person NOT getting free MOD installation would have such a big test!
But to me, to open the engine, and not mod in there, is too much to take!
Re: Re Ring TSB...new or the same one (Ram Air Tony)
RAT, I'm looking forward to hearing how this works out for you. I've been burning oil since day one, but I figured I could buy a lot of oil rather than have someone open up the engine. I need to have this taken care of before my warranty runs out. I still can't believe that we were the only ones burning oil at MSR last Fall. Keep us posted.

Re: Re Ring TSB...new or the same one (Ram Air Tony)
I had my rings redone in November 2001. I have a very good working relationship with my dealer and they did not put me through an extensive oil consumption test. I had been keeping track of it all along and had dates, oil level readings, mileage, etc to back up my claims that the car was using oil. The dealership apparently had no problems getting it approved by GM as they did the job quickly. I'd say that whether or not you have to go through an oil consumption test from the dealer is up to the dealer. Good luck in getting this issues fixed.
Re: Re Ring TSB...new or the same one (Ram Air Tony)
I'm going to my dealer to have this discussion (argument) tomorrow morning and then negotiate with the GM rep. As of today when I spoke with my service advisor it doesn't look like it is going to be easy and will involve a lot of stress and energy. :cry :mad :mad :cuss :cuss
