Although it hasn't made any spots on the floor, noticed that my 99 rear diff shows some signs of leakage on the carrier. I have a GM extended warranty. How is this problem usually resolved? Will the dealer need to open the pumpkin? Possible to have a set of 3.73s or 3.90s slipped in at the time of repair?
There is a vent on the top of the differential carrier. It is normal for some fluid to exit the vent to the extent that dirt and dust mark the area that the fluid has covered. If there are no drops on the floor than it should be ok.
On my 98, what I thought was a diff leak turned out to be rear transmission seals. Replaced front and back seals under GMPP, they had to pull transmission
I have the same problem on my 98 with the tranny. It appears to be a bad rear seal. Since I'm paying the labor to have it fixed I figure I'll go ahead and upgrade the diiferential to a 3:42. :yesnod:
My 99 coupe also had a small leak from the driver side of the diff(4 or 5 drops per week on floor). I took my car to the dealer and the service REP gave me an est for $400 to repair seal on diff. My car only had 30k miles but was out of warranty(over 3 yrs old). I went in and spoke with the service MANAGER and asked him if it was typical for a $50k car to be leaking a vital fluid with such low mileage and no history of abuse? he agreed and did the repair for free! :) The troubling part for me was that the est called for 4 hours labor to do repair which was the bulk of the bill, parts and fluid was less than $30.00. Then when I got my car back and looked at the repair ticket the mechanic stated it took 1.2 hours to complete. There is no doubt in my mind that if I was paying for this repair I would have been billed for 4 hours labor. I know they use a book to quote repair est and there is nothing wrong with this practice, I just wanted to share this experience with everyone so you can try to be an informed consumer. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!
