These cars are known to have piston slap which is very common. If you check under the search section I think you may see a few post refering to this topic

:iagree: :yesnod: The only other possible culprit would be a rocker that spit out the needle bearings(somewhat common on LS-architecture engines) but you'd make noise all the time.
I think the most likely culprit is a broken rocker arm. I had one break on me and I thought it was a lifter at first as well. Rockers are pretty cheap (~$20) and very easy to install as well. The part that sucks is all the little needle bearings that will have went all through your engine. They will just find their way down into the pan and stay down there because of the screen on your pickup.
Is the noise present at cold start, then appear to diminish and then return after the engine warms up?
If so, you could have an O-ring seal cut between the oil pump screen and the oil pump.
GM just issued a bulletin for this condition.
Engine Knock or Lifter Noise (Replace O-Ring) #02-06-01-038 - (12/02/2002), and it covers 2001-2003 Chevrolet Corvette along with other vehicles that use the same engine; as well as the 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L.
