Default LS1 vs. LS6 timeframe

I'm a bit confused over exactly when the "general" made the switch from LS1 to LS6 components.was it exactly at the 2001 to 2002 model year or what.thanks in advance!!!

If you're talking about the use of LS-6 components in the LS-1, they started using the LS-6 block in the LS-1 motors during the early part of the 2001 model year. The LS-6 manifold crossed over around the same time, I believe.

If you're talking about the introduction of various components to the LS-6 itself, the first changes occurred in 2001 with the introduction of the LS-6 and then there were more changes in 2002 when the LS-6 horsepower rating climbed from 385 to 405. The later changes included sodium filled exhaust valves, higher lift cam, revised airbox cover, and revised cats which eliminated the pup-cats. None of these changes made it to the LS-1.

Just a point to clarify. All 2001 LS1's received the same manifold as the LS6. It was not a interim change during that model year like the LS6 block was.

I understand the LS6 block and intake became stock components in the second half of the 2001 production run. Mine was built 6/11/01 and understand it has both LS6 block and intake. :hurray:

As I stated above, this is again misinformation.

The intake manfold was the same for the LS1 and LS6 since the very first 2001 came off the assembly line.

This is also heavily stated in all the GM literature material.

Kewl,

Does this mean that all '02s have the LS-6 *block*? What is the difference between the LS1 and LS6 block?

Sometime during mid to late 2001 production, the LS1's began receiving the LS6 block. All 2002+ for sure have it.

The LS6 block is a somewhat stronger casting, and has windows in the bottom of the cylinders to help bay to bay breathing, to reduce resistance during high RPM operation. Thats about the major differences.

Since the beginning of 2001 all LS1's received the same manifold as the LS6.

Youve got the LS6 Block, Heads, and intake/exhaust Manifold.

But not the LS6 heads, or LS6 cam, or LS6 programming.

Krabtree13, this is what Kewlbrez said:

It should read:

Youve got the LS6 Block, and LS6 intake/exhaust Manifold, but LS1 Heads

Kewlbrez is one of our most knowledgable members on tech facts, so I am sure he just wrote it wrong

CJS, and Pace, thanks for fixing my syntax
I definatly didnt mean to say the LS1 motors had LS6 heads :) :seeya

If that was the case, I would not have bought a set of LS6 heads from pacethis, for my LS1 ! :)
