Default Transmission Overheating

I have a 2001 base with the 4L60E. I went for a nice drive this Saturday and the ambient temperature was around 58F. I wasn't driving to hard but after about an hour on the way home, i got a warning light about trans temp. I was a few minutes away from home and made it just fine.
On Sunday I took it out for maybe 20 minutes and my temp got to 198F.
The car has a lot of unknown mods to it. I am not sure what radiator is in it, but it is not stock. I am not sure what I should do.
Should I add a aux trans cooler?
The engine temp never got over 180 both days.

Yes, and don't shut it off until you reinstall the plug.

Yes and no. They guy I bought it from said that the previous owner said the guy before him did a cam and radiator. I found out this weekend it is not a LS1 but a LS6. I have been fixing things as I go along. Gauges didn't work, seats were sliding, shifter was off, bad brakes, dirty oil. Every time I open the hood I find something new. I don't know a lot about C5's but I am learning.

LS6s in C5s were specific to 2001 - 2004 Z06s, your profile states that you have a 2001 base corvette; how do you know it is an LS6? If you want to learn how to do things properly get yourself a set of factory service manuals and/or an ALLDATA DIY account.

I ran into the the older owner. Unless it is a LS1 with 243 heads and a LS6 intake, I think it might be a LS6.

2001 - 2004 LS1/LS6s share the same intake manifold. Heads with the 243 casing number were also available on the LS2.

So it was about 3/4 quart low. We filled it up and it still got to 230 on the way home. Should I just add a trans cooler?

Just add parts without a diagnosis?

Did you use the service manual procedure for checking the fluid and servicing?

I did, we lifted the car, had it running and in neutral. It was low and we added about 3/4 of a quart. I am not sure what else to do. I cant find any leaks.

On the way home the trans temp reached 232, oil was at 214 and coolant was at 201.

I am kind of lost.

Possibility that the transmission cooling lines have blockage or the rubber section of one of the lines is kinked, just throwing out some ideas.

How would I go about checking for a blockage. The rubber parts looked fine.

The transmission pumps oil out to the radiator, possibly the pump is not working properly, only way to check lines is to disconnect and blow some air thu them, should be no need to add an external cooler if everything is working with the factory setup.

Also check for dirt/debris/leaves in between radiator and a/c condenser.

Unfortunately, depending on how you view things, your education will continue. Also, as the C5 platform ages I believe the electrical issues will become even more common than they are now, and will be the most prevalent issues, by far.

I would have dropped the pan, insect the filter for debris, smell the fluid for signs of burnt, replaced filter with new and load fresh fluid.
At this point, it cant hurt and it is just a $125.00 gamble

It’s an auto with a cam? Does it have a high stall and stock gearing? A high stall can cause lots of heat. A high stall with stock gearing will constantly whine.
