I recenty bought a used 98 c5. I went to take the wheels off and noticed there was a lugnut lock on each wheel. I've looked everywhere for the key, but apearently I dont have one. What can I do?
Here is what I did to my 97 with a lost key. Take a 8 or 12 point impact socket that is a little smaller than the lock and hit it over the lock. Sounds harsh but all you will damage is the locking lug. Then just use an impact and take it off.
There are only a few keys. Some dealers have a master set and will take the old ones off or order you a new key. In a 98 the key should be in the left rear under the top of the cover. If you open up the cover and the key is not there you will see a spot to store it.
You might also try some other owners in your area to see if their key will fit your car.
I looked under the left compartment cover and its not there. I went to the dealership today and the parts guy wasnt sure if each key is different or if they are all the same, so I didnt order the lock set yet. If I have too...I'll take the car to a tire place and see if they can rip them off for me.
I had the same problem on my last camaro. They are easy to take off.
Just do what forracfan said. Or go and buy four cheap 12 point sockets that are close to the size of the lock,,,hammer them on to each lock and use a breaker bar to loosen each lug. If you go to a tire store they can do it for you to,,,don't let them charge you more than $30 bucks......they are easy take off.
Most tire places have a tool that takes them off. It is sort of a socket with internal fingers that grip the lugnut. they just spin it off then. Go by one and ask. Or using the socket method yourself is the easy way out for you.
