Default C5 Internal Water condensation

My Red 1999 Vette seems to collection Air Conditioning condensation above the passenger feet and drips excessively on to the carpet.
Any ideas on the Fix other than going to GM?

As I recall from others who have had this problem. there is a drain tube where you are describing that is clogged up. Clear that out and your problem should go away.

There is a metal tube that sticks out past the firewall directly behind the passenger-side cylinder head. Attached to it is a rubber L-shaped tube that aims down. It's hard to get to and needs to be unclogged.

Don't run your A/C until you get this fixed, otherwise the condensation can very easily fry the computer located behind the passenger-side kick-panel.

pasovette,

I had the same problem with my 1999 C5 coupe - here is the problem and solution:

The a/c drain line becomes clogged and causes water to back-up in the evaporator case and overflow into the passenger footwell. The water leak can enter the BCM computer compartment and ruin the computer, immobilizing the car. This happened to me while driving out-of-state, on vacation. The car was out of service for five days (and my wife and I were stranded).

You must raise the car, or jack-up the right front of the car (use a jack stand). With the engine cold, remove the rubber elbow that is attached to a hard plastic nipple that exits the firewall, (at the rear of the RH engine head). It helps to use a small screwdriver size tack puller. The elbow is about the diameter of your finger and has a 90 degree bend. It is obvious what it is.

In the rubber elbow you will probably find white, crusty material that is clogging the tube. I believe it "sheds" from the a/c evaporator, then solidifies in the tube. You will have to clean out the rubber elbow and cut off the end of it. The end is moulded to an opening about the size of a split pea. The opening does not permit water to exit the elbow fast enough during high condensation or when the tube is partially obstructed.

Place a small amout of silicone dielectric grease on the firewall end of the rubber elbow, as this will help you slide it back on. The working room is very cramped and it is impossible to reach from above (engine compartment) or even if the engine is hot.

Good luck. Contact me if you need more information. This is a common C5 defect that occurs in hot, humid weather (and Chevrolet has chosen to ignore it).

NOTE: A GM Techline article about this problem instructs mechanics to take a plastic "zip tie" and push it into the hard plastic nipple, while the rubber elbow is removed, to clear any other debris.
