Dexos is just a marketing term that GM made up to license to oil companies. It's like saying "Wider is better", there's pretty much no specs behind. API/ILSAC ratings are really comprehensive, there's no reason to use anything else as a standard.
There are some oils (Like Amsoil) that exceed a given spec more than others. But on a street car, if you get anywhere near the wrong end of those specs, many things have already gone horribly wrong. Endurance racer engines etc are a bit of a different story, but no one here is running a LMP1 engine on the street
