Default Speed sensor

Is the speed sensor on the top of the 97 C5 transmission what records the average speed reading in the DIC or is another part on the car the culprit of an incorrect readout?

Are you referring the the VSS (vehicle speed sensor)? VSS is on the differential. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ed-sensor.html

I did not even know the average speed was captured by the IPC. What incorrect readout are you speaking of?

The average speed readout has to be a output from the PCM which of course uses the VSS as it's input.

In going through the readouts on my dash, I came across something that tells me my average speed for that particular trip. I know it is inaccurate because I could be on the freeway at eighty for fifty miles and dash screen shows that my average speed was only like 24.2 MPH. I presume there is a sensor somewhere that records that and updates the readout but it must be faulty and I'd like to know where that particular sensor is located so that I can replace it with a new one.

I think you're making an assumption about how the average speed readout works. It maintains an average across all driving / ignition time on until it is cleared/reset (with the reset button). It's not reporting average speed for the trip. You can make it do that, though, by pressing the reset button on that screen at the start of your trip.

There is no average speed sensor, the VSS or vehicle speed sensor located on the diff is the only sensor, is your speedometer accurate? I am not totally sure where the average speed is calculated, it maybe at the PCM or at the DIC.
