Will be installing headers “soon”, and am considering a starter heat shield. Some say they have not experienced starter problems related to headers, while others did have starter problems/failures. I would like to know your thoughts and experiences.
Where I live in FL it’s common to experience 90°-95° ish temps half the year, so I’m thinking err on the side of caution.
I have found two styles that have been discussed on the C6 forum:
One is from Speedway that is a stand-off style ($25 on the Speedway site). Members posted they think it’s a good design, but requires a bit of modification to fit out starters.
The other is from Lingenfelter which is a molded heat reflective stainless steel and ceramic shield that is banded to the starter ( $114 on the Summit site).
I have ARH brand headers, no starter heat issues. I would go with a header wrap rather than those shields. I've seen tests where wraps or coating headers actually reduced temps.

As vette4fl knows, Florida heat in summer is absolutely brutal. If you're doing a lot of around town, stop and go, I'd go for the LPE shield. Reason being aluminum will quickly absorb the header heat, and is even closer to the starter. Must be a reason LPE went in the direction they did. Personally, and you probably already know this, I've run a 427 LS7 for 20 years. Still on the stock LS1 starter, with Kooks LTs, and it has never had any trouble cranking the big engine over. But I do a lot of highway, distance driving. FWIW....
