Have a 2001 coupe M6. Lately I have noticed going from 4th to 5th it keeps slipping past to reverse with the grinding to let me know I missed 5th. Never did it before, the shifter seems looer also. Any ideas? Can the linkage be adjusted or could it be something else.
Are you sure you're missing 5th and going into reverse or could it just be grinding while going into 5th? I've had my transmission worked on twice and once it was because it would grind going into 5th at around 70+ mph. Turned out it was the synchros and the dealer fixed it.
Its not your shifter, its the reverse lockout solenoid. A while back (about a year ago) someone posted a picture of the rear extension housing off the transmission, part of the reverse lockout solenoid had fallen apart and was sitting in the bottom.
Thank you for the advice. Not to sound paranoid but will be making an appointment for service next week for it, do you think I might have damaged the gears since it did grind on 4 separate occasions going from 4th to 5th but into reverse instead.
Just took it to the dealer this morning & the service manager was able to duplicate it after the 1-4 shift of the grinding going into 5th. He says he was sure he was in 5th & it must be an internal transmission problem such as the synchronisor. Will be draining & dropping it this afternoon.
Just got the report back from the dealer, they drained 1/2 qt. oil from the transmission & found loads of brass & metal. They got the okay from Chevrolet for a brand new transmission, not a rebuilt & it will be here next week. Wonder what could have caused all that brass & metal in the trans oil after only 5700 miles?????
The dealer said even if it did grind in reverse since the reverse solenoid lockout was working which it turned out not to be there would be much less brass & metal in the oil. It was grinding going into 5th gear. Next week they are getting a brand new one from Chevrolet & will look into mine to see what the problem was.
