The belts on my coupe seem to last about 20k miles. I'm on my 3rd and it was put on about 1,500 miles ago. This past Monday I got caught in some rain on the way home, so this morning the belt was squeaking loudly when I started her up. Went to the dealer to complain. We popped the hood and the guy just comes over and without saying a word shoots a spay of silicone grease at the alternator pulley while the engine is running. WTF?!? Ok, granted the squeak is completely gone, but lubing up the belt can't be good, right???
Mine was squeeling and they tried the spray stuff. It lasted until I got home before it started making the same noise again. I took it back and Chevy eventually wound up replacing the crankshaft balancer pulley, the belt tensioner, and the belt before the squeel went away. I believe the service manager said that there can't be any play in the pulley and mine had a bunch.
There is also a TSB for a squeaking idler pulley on 1997 - 1999 Corvettes (and 1998 - 1999 Camaro / Firebird with the LS1 engine). The original pulley (below the alternator) was assembled with a crushed dust shield that contacts the bearing race.
Replacement of the idler pulley based upon the TSB instructions eliminated the squeak on my 1999 C5 coupe.
The bulletin number is 99-06-01-007 "Technical - Accessory Drive Squeak (replace idler pulley)."
