Default Gas smell after O2 sensor replacement?

Few weeks back got the p1153 code on 02 z51. Cleared the code and drove for another week or 2 and it never came back. Went ahead and replaced the bank 2 sensor 1 with a genuine Gm parts one.

Ever since then I have a slight gas smell upon cranking and driving the car. I have heard it can take time for computer to adjust to new sensor. Anybody have any experience with this?

Have you thought about re-installing the old 02 sensor? It shouldn't have to take time for a new sensor to work properly, the smell of gasoline says that something is not working properly.

If you have a gas smell just after crank/engine start.......that is not an 02 sensor causing the problem. I would be looking around for a leak.

Do you have a scan tool to look at your upstream O2 sensors…they should be oscillating between 200-800mv’s…if that sensor were “stuck lean” possibly due to a bad sensor or a wiring issue the PCM thinks you have a lean condition and increase injector pulse to keep the fuel trims near 0…you will smell unburned fuel and if the car is in your garage it will stink !!…I’ve had it happen to my C5 years ago…it was “stuck” at 100mv’s…where did you buy your sensor ??…if Amazon or EBay it’s probably counterfeit…Denso’s from Autozone worked fine in my C5…Delphi and Bosch were both no good.

I believe the 1153 is rich to lean switching or a “lazy” O2 sensor…like I mentioned when the engine is warmed up switching between 200-800mv’s is what you should see…this can also be a vacuum leak upstream of that 02 sensor…that will drive the O2 lean.

So the o2 sensors don't do anything during crank or when the engine is cold, it's only until the car hits closed loop that the o2 sensor dictates how much fuel is injected.

Typically the gas smell came from a leaking crossover tube at the gas tank. Have you looked to see if there is an evidence of a fuel leak throughout the rest of the car? When you did the o2 sensor, did you touch anything else?

recently had transmission replaced and entire engine pulled and every seal replaced as well aswbew balancer and ac compressor installed. Only thing touched when replacing o2 sensor was i changed brakes pads as well. As soon as I crank car I smell a little gas. Has been sitting for a week outside too

Yeah, need to get it up in the air and start inspecting things. Also under the hood, not impossible to have a poor connection at the fuel rail (or a leaky injector o-ring, or a leaky schrader valve at the rail, etc etc etc etc)

Drove today and had NO gas smell. At one point I did smell gas but it was fleeting and can't be sure it was even my car. It left as quickly as it came and never returned.

Could it be moisture in the exuast from the rain burning out ?

Two thoughts:
1) How would the rain get into your exhaust system?
2) If the rain smells like gasoline where you live....that's a big problem.

1) rain /weather causing moisture to get into exhaust is far from a rare or unusual occurrence.
2) the burning of the moisture mixed with the residue of exhaust in the pipes could potentially create some form of smell I'd assume. Maybe not like that of gasoline though. Have you ever cleaned exhaust before?

I welded a hole a friend of mine had in some borlas years back and the inside was far from clean.
