Default A/C issue

I got this 03 Z06 2 years ago and the A/C blows cold sometimes and other times just lukewarm air. If I get on the freeway it gets cold again.
Also if I let it warm up in the garage it's ice cold even when driving around. If I stop and go in somewhere for a few minutes it is lukewarm when I get back in and leave.
Do I need a feon charge or could it be something else. I have never messed with A/C issues.
Any advice is appreciated and I know I will be taking to an A/C shop to have it fixed.

If you never messed with AC take your car to a specialist.

Yeah I was hoping to get an idea of what is wrong. My guy I trust quoted me a little over $1200 out the door. New compressor, dryer orifice tube and what else goes with it.
I just wonder why sometimes ice cold and other times lukewarm. I trust my quy just was hoping for a feon top off haha.
Thanks for the reply

Why would he quote you that price for those parts and he hasn’t even diagnosed it yet ??…looks like he’s just a “parts changer” just like 99% of professional nechanics out there…find another shop !!

Known him for 30 years probably and he always treated me right, no upsell or replacing part that are still good.
But today he drove to the back and in less then 10 minutes came up with that diagnosis and pricing.
Will definitely get another estimate. It's just hard to find competent mechanics now days.

The estimate is not the concern....it's the diagnosis. What state was the car in when he drove it? Did he hook up an gauges? Did he explain why he thought the parts needed to be changed?

He drove around the back into the shop. I didn't go watch. I was concerned about how quick he came back with the everything needs to be replaced. Will definitely try and find another shop with a good reputation and get a second and/or third opinion. I live in suburbs of Houston that used to be small towns. Been some mechanics that have good reputation for over 20 years.
Car is black with black interior and it was very hot this afternoon.

Very simple test the next time it is blowing warm with the a/c on to give an indication if the refrigerant side of the system is working.

Pull over to a safe location.
With the engine running. Raise the hood and check: Is the compressor clutch spinning? Is the suction line going to the compressor on the passenger side cold?

The only way to tell if you have the correct charge of freon is to recover the freon and weight it. Then refill the system with the correct amount of freon. R134 is still pretty cheap.
