Default REV LIMITER AT 6500

Should not a LSI with no internal engine mods rev to 6500 VERY SAFELYY ??

I got a '63 fuel coupe (40 year old engine design) and it redlines at 6500.

I'have had her to 7000 a few times with no problems.

My guess is the General set her at 6000 to cut down on waranty problems, but surley 6500 should be no problem!! :smash: :smash: :smash:

:steering: :steering: :steering: :steering: :steering:

I have set her at 6500 limit and want to know if you 'all think this is as safe as 6000??? Thanks for the replies.

It is rumored that the push rods on the LS1 engine are rather soft and that pushing the rev limiter too much is asking for trouble. I set mine for 6300 and haven't had a problem yet. On the other hand, I am rather careful not to hit the limiter so I don't hit 6300 very often.
I generlly shift out at 6000 which is just above the power curve and I feel my car runs strong.

The limiter is set at 6250 from the factory. I used a Hypertech to set my rev limiter to 6500 but then went back to stock since I did not seem to gain anything with the extra rpms. In fact I think the car performs better when I shift at 5800 to 5900 rpm.

Theré´s no need to rev that high unless you have some bigger mods (heads/cam) done. Otherwise you will gain nothing but stress the engine without a reason.

I run a C5R 8.5:1 Twin Turbo LPE setup.I have my rev ltr. set for 6300 rpm and when I race I shift betweem 58-5950 depending on how on I am that day.
My goal is to shift at 5900-just under 6000.I havent bounced off my rev ltr. since the 427 went in.At hi boost you not only bog but can send excess pressure back into the turbo which can cause more Turbo problems.
Why go to 6800 rpm like some I know its excessive on the valve train and your slowing things down by staying to HI in your rev band and hitting fuel cut offs which are not good fro your motor.
Add a 60.00 shift light if need be or find a spot for a big Autometer 8" tach.
Good Luck and no over rev Dave S.
When you mod it the Tach IMHO wont stay up tothe faster reving and in my 03' Cobra I will build a shift light in the dash, that motor

IT'S NOT TO SAFE BECAUSE THE VALVE SPRINGS ARE WING SO ABOVE 5,700 OR SO RPM YOU'LL GET VALVE FLOAT AND IF YOU MISS A SHIFT YOU COULD BEND A PUSH ROD.

Like Michael said above it's useless unless you have a cam to take advantage of the extra rpms.

:iagree:

There is a web site for calculating shift points, http://www.prestage.com/carmath/calc_shiftpoints.asp. If you have a dyno run for your car, and your TQ curve is the same as mine, the calculator will show 6200 as the optimum shift point for a near stock LS1. Due to tach lag, shifting at 58 - 5900 in first is pretty close to 6200 RPM at the motor. Interesting that the factory setting is 50 RPM higher then the calculated optimum shift point, huh?

I had my rev limiter bumped to 6500 only to allow me to finish the 1/4 mile in 3rd. It's a trade off between giving up a little ET & MPH for consistancy in bracket racing. I rairly ever finish the 1/4 in 3rd but, since I'm not abusing it, I'm not going to spend $$'s to have it set back. It's only a factor if you run the motor up against it all the time, IMHO.

The 97'-00's are good to 6500, and 01's and up are good to 6900rpm. The rods and pistons are the weak link. In 01, GM used new rod bolts that substantially increased the rod strength. The GM rods are "powdered metal" and have their limits.
