Really sorry to bother you all. I am trying to put a new dimmer **** on. I really feel a little stupid posting this but I cannot get the new **** on. It looks so strait forward but it simply will not stay on. I have tried using a little force but I do not want to break anything. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Charl
First question is do you have the right ****?
How about a well lit focused picture or two, especially the part that is supposed to interface with the car. Maybe someone can spot an issue.

Does the d-shaped geometry full insert into the ****?
The inside of yours looks slightly different from mine. I can remove and replace mine easily. It's an interference fit. The flat side of the inside of the button lines up with the flat side of the stalk.
You might take a set of dial calipers and verify that the distance from the back side of your button to the inside where the switch stalk should sit is not longer than the distance from the switch housing where the button rests to the end of the switch stalk in the pushed in position. If it is then your button would bottom out before the stalk enters where it is supposed to sit and I would say you have the wrong button. But you could probably sand it down and make it work. No one would see the sanded side.
I could take measurements if that would help you figure this out.
