read some horror stories about the shift cable bushing going south and the need to be towed home. I'm going to make a template for a support to keep the cable from falling out from the shift arm. have seen a couple on the forum and would like to see some ideas from others. my bushings look ok but you never know when they will go south. seems like there is enough room up there but it's touch and go. would rather not remove the shift arm right now but try to make a brace with everything in place now. lets see your ideas. btw the ones I have seen on the forum are great.
You're right that there isn't much room up there but this fit, all 6 fasteners are 4-40. The shift arm dimensions from one car to another might vary a lot, these parts fit mine.
Here's some photos:

hey Fast one you said rough drawings. those were some of the most detailed drawings my tool and dye maker friend and myself have ever seen. thanks again.
here's a rough template of a containment piece I made for the trans. end of the shift cable. this one is .030 aluminum which was easy to bend to what I was trying to do. I then made one from .060 and metal zip tied it to the trans shift arm. had the wife hop in and run it through the gears a few times and it worked very good. when I say rough template I really mean rough. my goal was try to install without taking anything apart which I did. removing the trans shift arm would have been a breeze to install and make a much better one. attaching this without removing the shift arm was a real pita. pay attention to the clearance between the arm and plastic connectors mounted just behind it. real tight there. I'll get to this project this winter as the instrument cluster is waiting to be fixed now. it's the DIC buttons don't work boogie. gonna try to assemble one similar to Fast one's. anybody have a solution for the shifter end cable containment?
