I just looked at spec for new vette. The MN6 weighs 40 lbs more than the automatic ! I thought automatics were always heavier than manual transmissions, what's with this ?
Re: Why is MN6 40 lbs heavier than automatic ? (Oldvetter)
Not sure myself, but I think the following contribute:
1. Flywheel. A4s use the torque converter as the flywheel, with a flex plate for the starter gear. Also, I've heard (not personally verified) that the flywheel in the C5s is a dual mass system, done mainly to smooth out the LS-1's idle.
2. The MN6 has six forward gears as opposed to four in the auto.
3. Then you've got the clutch, pressure plate, slave cylinder, throwout bearing.
So, seems like it could be more. Of course, the auto's weight probably doesn't take into account the weight of the cooling lines going to the radiator and that associated weight.
Hopefully someone will straighten me out where I'm wrong (I know my kids do! :D)
