Default Just a kid with a corvette

To preface this I am completely new to driving or working on a corvette. I have 2000 C5 vert with a stock engine and 4L60E. Only part that's aftermarket is the exhaust which is a corsa extreme cat back system. i'm coming to y'all to ask what mods I can do that will make the car faster in terms of straight line speed/acceleration.

That's not a lot of budget in today's world, but many owners change the differential gears because it's an automatic.

3.73 or 3.90 is the consensus. If your light to light spirited driver go with the 3.90

Keep in mind that if you change the gearing, you will need someone to adjust the shift points in the transmission = tune.

Roughly how much would a tune cost for shift points only?

Just pay the 700 to 800 and get your tune dialed in. with the gear change and the added hp from tuning you'll be very happy.

There is also a VIN decoder in this forum - I forget how detailed it gets.

Horsepower gets expensive kid. An RPM gear set is at least 2300 dollars, plus installation and tuning. You can’t do this without a lift of some sort. Gears don’t add horsepower, it just changes gearing and feels faster, you might pickup 2-3mph in the quarter mile. A good set of headers is expensive too, does add horsepower, but also needs tuning. Your young, enjoy the car as is and learn to drive it. First lesson, don’t try and spin tires around corners, that back end kicks out hard, only hit the gas when the steering wheel is strait.

FYI, I have headers, cats, intake and tuned and my automatic vette made 340 wheel horsepower on a dyno. I also have 3.73 gears and a 3200 stall. If your all stock your probably making 290-295 wheel horsepower.

You absolutely can do this without a lift. I dropped the whole drivetrain on jackstands the first time I did it. Absolutely doable with the right jackstands, jacks, etc.

It doesn't just "feel" faster.....it does accelerate faster.

so it’s best to just do gears and a tune?

Hard to answer that question with so little information.

How many miles on the car, and what is the condition? Used? Salvage? Well maintained?

How much money are you prepared to spend?

This is the most important question of all, especially if you are working on a high mile/multiple owner car. There are numerous items that need to be investigated when dropping the drivetrain that will almost certainly involve more expense in addition to the differential and tune. You also have to have the correct tools for the job. Even if you do it on jackstands, you still need ramps, multiple jacks, jackstands, lifting pucks, trans jack, and always helpful to make a dolly to lower the cradle on. Also need a service manual if you want to do the job correctly and not miss any key points not captured by the youtube mechanic heros.

45k miles, 2 owner who both maintained it to be show ready, didn’t daily it at all. Prepared to spend however much is needed for a tuner and a shop to put the gears in. I’m in love with some Texas speed cams to make it choppy too.

That's a whole other discussion....now you are talking intake, heads, cam, headers, converter...and maybe a gear swap + tune. Sounds like you have a solid platform from which to work though. Probably a good idea to determine what you really want.

I do know what I want for the car it’s the first two mods that I should do is the question but the general consensus seems to be tune+gears. I was just curious cuz Texas speed claims on their website they have cams that can go in with just the valve springs kit
