The pin is an alignment "gauge tool". It's purpose is to set the shifter, as it's installed in the shift box, into the true neutral position. If the pin doesn't easily drop into the alignment holes, then you need to loosen the clamp that holds the shifting rod in position, adjust the shaft that's in the shift box, so the alignment pin drops into place, then tighten the clamp back up.
