This topic seems to always turn into a long one...all that I can tell you is that GM removed it..I removed it..and I think a lot of other Hi HP cars have too. Good Luck.
The key thing here is to find any one with a 2001 and up that removed the screen and had such big problems that they had to get a new MAF so as to replace the screen and correct the probem.
If no such person exists, then it is a good free mod, that GM saw fit to do on 2002 and up Z06's. Question is, then why didn't GM do it on all the vettes? Why just Z06's?
The MAF in the Corvette is the same MAF that GM puts in their pickup trucks. The convoluted air flow of the truck snorkle required the air straightening vanes (screen) for proper air flow across the sensor pickup wires on the MAF.
The Corvette has such a striaght and direct air flow path that the vanes were unnecessary and restrictive. The 2002 Z06 probably got it for the additional HP that helps set it aside from a stock C5.
My 2001 has a 2002 Z06 MAF in it (I purchased one) and have had zero problems. I kept the OEM 2001 "just in case". Once you cut out the screen, you're stuck if there are any problems.
Drop the $350 and go purchase a new MAF. It's only worth a few HP but when added to other mods can sum up to a nice total increase in HP.
