Auto Trans Shift Cable Bushings
As the proud owner of a 2000 C5, I'd like to take care of a few maintenance items proactively, and the shift cable bushings are getting to the top of my list.
I've got a couple of questions:
I see Zip and C&S Corvettes both carry the split bushings. Is one better than the other?
Also, can I swap out these bushings from under the car so I don't have to pull the shifter?
And, do the old intact bushings come out easily, or will I need to break them out?
Thanks
The cable housing will be EXTREMELY brittle by the shifter. By the time the bushings go out, just replace the cable assembly. Otherwise you must be exceptionally careful on the shifter side and even then they crack easily.
I replaced the bushing at the shifter end about 6 months ago. Don’t brake the cable pulling the shifter out. And yes, old bushing came out in chunks after carefully grinding it out with a pick and small screw driver. Take your time, be patient.
I bought the bushing kit I think from Amazon and hacksaw cut split the proper size bushing in case I have to replace the rear trans side on the road (easier to press on by hand with split 🤷🏻♂️)
