Default 2004 Fuel Issues - Half fuel capacity?

Hello, I have recently purchased a 2004 base C5 and am running into some issues, hopefully can get some insight. For starters. Upon buying the vehicle I noticed the fuel gauge does not work properly, intermittently will change from a full tank down to empty, however this alone does not worry me so much.

Today, I took her out and yesterday the gauge was reading about half a tank (which seems generally correct based on the amount of driving since I fully filled up). I let it idle for about 5 minutes before I took it out, and the car died and would not start. I assumed it was just out of fuel and the gauge isn’t accurate whatsoever, which would be fine with me. However, after putting in about 5 gallons of gas, it started right up and I headed to the gas station. The weird part is at the gas station, I only got about 0.5 gallons in the car before it was full and started overflowing.

is it somehow possible that I am running on only 1 fuel tank? Even then, I think 5.5 gallons seems a little bit low considering it’s a total of about 19 gallons per both tanks. Looking for any insight into this issue, what I can do to diagnose, etc. I appreciate your time and information, thank you!

You should get some diagnotics on your sensorsignals from both fueltanks with a Tech2 or similar
When both tanks are 100% full the sensors values should be approx 250 ohm and give approx 2.5 volt each.
With fuel consumption the right sensor votage will decrease until right tank is empty and then the left sensor signal decrease when fuel level decrease in left tank.
If this order of fuel sensor sensor signal does not happen DTC's wil be set.
But with viewing the sensorsignals it should be possible to observe which sensor causing problems

C5s are known to have fuel sender issues. Especially if the car has been using cheapo fuel with high sulfur content. My car started having issues similar to yours at around 110,000 miles. I removed the senders, and they were pretty well worn out. I changed the senders. New ones from Rock. Be advised that, AFAIK, new ones are no longer available. Plenty of info out there if you search. Sometimes Techron wil help clean dirty senders. But you'll find that, eventually, you'll spend more on Techron than new senders would've cost. Good luck.....
