Default Column Lock HELP PLEASE!! 98 C5 A4 Convertible

Let me start by saying I have read every post on this forum and the sticky on this subject as well as installed and did testing with Richard with the LMC5. Unfortunately, none of that has worked. The car shuts off at 2 MPH.

About 2 years ago I had an issue with the head unit so decided to change it out for a double din unit, amp, and new speakers. I ran new speaker wire for the system as well. I attempted to run a backup camera, but I could not get it to work with the relay supplied by Crutchfield. While hooking up the backup camera I did have to cut and splice the reverse light wire from the BCM. That is repaired and the reverse lights work as the should. With a job and family this took about 6 months to complete. When I went to pull it out of the garage the battery was dead so I installed a new battery.

Before the radio work I had occasionally gotten the pull key message, but no issue once I pulled the key and reinserted it. The car fired right up and sounded great and I pulled it out of the garage into the driveway, then shut off. I hooked up my scanner and it shows the column lock is active. From there I have spent well over a year going down the rabbit hole with no success, so I am turning to the experts. Here is what has been done:
  • Read that it could be an ignition issue, so ordered a new ignition switch and installed. Still no change. Verified the key ohms match the BCM
  • Verified that the car had the recall performed
  • Removed K Harness
  • I started getting a "Low Voltage" issue, so replaced the voltage regulator. That resolved the issue
  • Verified I do not have a CLB relay
  • Installed LMC5, this still did not fix the problem.
  • Worked with Richard with the LMC5, verified installation was correct. Verified ECM was acting as it should when key was turned on. Richard sent a replacement LMC5 to make sure it wasn't a bad part. Replaced and still no change
  • My 98 does not have a brown wire, so that is not an issue
Guys, I am going to be honest, my late wife got me this car before she passed (10 years ago) and it is my baby, but at this point I am ready to just put it up for sale as is or set it on fire. I have a good scan tool and can do about anything to a car, so please throw out your suggestions or questions. I need help.

I recall reading of the 2 mph being reset to a much higher number via ECM tuning. Not an actual fix, but perhaps a worthwhile alternative.

Yes, you can have someone change the 2mph fuel shutoff to 200mph with tunning software, many people have done it.

I would still get the message and would have to tow to the tuner, so not ideal.

I sympathize with you as my 1997 coupe experiences the pull key wait ten seconds message during winter months. I simply pull the key and wait 10 secounds, if not it will stall. You might be able to find someone to come to your place and perform the change. Good luck.

I agree a true fix is the better answer. I have the ‘99 service manual and will see if it offers a troubleshooting suggestion.
I haven’t searched, but I also vaguely recall someone changing either the ECU or possibly the BCM for a similar problem — which would not be fun either.
