Magnesium Wheel Powdercoat
I recently picked up an 18" square setup of the factory option magnesium wheels. I want to have them powder coated as the factory paint is severely chipped. I wanted to ask the forum if anyone has experience powder coating these wheels or could recommend a shop in Florida to do the work.
So far every powder coater I have spoken with is not interested because the wheels are a magnesium alloy. Apparently to chemically strip them requires a dedicated solution that only works on magnesium ($$$), or media blasting with plastic/walnut/co2 which may still possibly remove material. The shops I spoke with also have concerns about the magnesium off-gassing during the curing process and possibly popping the coating.
I appreciate any guidance you can offer.
PS I have considered painting but the amount of prep and sanding is daunting and I am worried that even with a two stage clear on top they will still not be durable.
