I just got my harmonic balancer replaced. When I started the car leaving the shop everything sounded and looked normal however I started it a day or to after and an awful squeaking noise is occurring. The shop I took it to is known for working on vettes so I wanted to post here and see if anyone had some input for what it is before I take it back on Monday.

Drip or better spray a little bit of clean water on the belt - not any of the pulleys - and see if the squeak stops. If it stops, it's the belt squeaking.
That squeak sounds like the reason mechanics always recommend changing the tensioner whenever you change a balancer on an ageing car, or a water pump. or a steering pump, or......
Well it went in without a squeak and know it does. Shops fault, but we all know how that goes, major of the shops will say that wasn't us. Its a coincidence. I hope you call that day. If not i bet ur **** out of luck.

Not the shops fault in this case usually. For instance, In another car I owned, I needed a new A/C clutch. When they took the belt off, my Harmonic Balancer fell apart (rubber was shot) when he was putting the belt back on... not his fault. The belt tension was holding the HB from flying apart when running. I declined a new tensioner, and guess what? Squeaky Skweek! I had to do the tensioner after all. MY FAULT for not listening to him and an extra day without my car.
Pulling a belt off a tensioned system very often exposes other worn items in a belt drive. If you have an old or high mileage car, the tensioner should always be replaced when replacing something else in the drive system. An extra $100 if you can swing it is great insurance for several years to come.
