Default Thoughts on Muffler Performance (Subaru Visitor)

First of all let me say hello and introduce myself. I am a visitor from the land of Subarus (www.i-club.com) and I'm an owner of a 2002 Impreza WRX Wagon. The reason I'm here is that I'm looking for an exhaust solution for my car and, not wanting to throw my money away on one of the $1200 "brand name" or JDM turbo-back systems, I am opting for a custom bent system with the muffler of my choice.

My problem is that I have unfortunately lost contact with the wonderful world of domestic performace since I bought my Subaru, and thus do not know which mufflers outperform others. I have always been a fan of the Flowmaster sound, but what I'm really looking for is power so I've been looking at Magnaflow, Borla, and the rest as well.

Any thoughts from those of you who have objective or subjective experience with various aftermarket mufflers would be greatly appreciated. Oh and just so you know, our cars have boxer motors so they DON'T sound like those annoying riced out Hondas. Trust me there's nothing I hate more than that droning coffee can exhaust sound. Thanks in advance for your input.

I went with Borla for my Vette. I don't know if they make a muffler that will fit a Subaru or not. Imo I would say go to some cruise places and listen to what the other guys are running on their WRX's. You might a better idea of what your looking for after you listen to a few.

Yeah, those Boxer motors sound like old VW's...great improvement. Anyhow, when I had my Mustang I had some 2 chamber flowmasters welded into the system. Had dynoed before and dynoed after. Actually LOST 7rwhp and 10 rwtq! I don't know what's good, but I do know that Flows aren't.

Wow. I was really considering the Flows, but after that they will definitely NOT be going on my car. Thanks much Bierbelly.

I went with Borla. While there is no real performance gain to be had on vettes through exhaust (excepting headers and highly modified cars) - there is a great deal of sound improvement. I chose Borla for that reason first, and for quality second. My XR1 system is very well made and fits cleanly.

p.s. welcome to the forum

He's not kidding I have a sound clip scooby sport sent me when I was looking into buying a WRX. It sounds awsome. If you can just get the muffler from them you will have a great sound.

I have had good results with my Borla's. I do know that Borla has a bunch of universal fit mufflers, you could even get an XR-1 race muffler if you want it loud. I am sure that you could get something for your car from them. Buy a muffler and have a local exhaust shop bend the pipes to fit it. Good luck!

I went with Borla on my C5, but if Dynomax had a decent system for the C5, I would have gone with that. I had Dynomax Welded Ultraflows on my Supercharged Regal GS and they sounded great. I never heard a deeper sounding exhaust on another Regal or Grand Prix GTP(same engine).

I am not sure you know, but I spoke with Brian, the president of GHL, and they got their start with Porche... It seems they are a big hitter with Porshe Exhaust systems??? I like the GHL. Their number one concern is power, then sound. The cars pulls really well with this system. But then again, I have not dynoed with the change and SOTP difference doesn't count.
