Default Replacing balancer, what else?

My balancer separated this morning and I'm consideri g doing heads and cam at the same time. Car is primarily street driven, I drive it harder than most, but not like a race car. I would like to maintain drivability without putting a stall on it. I have a set of 243 heads that need cleaned up that I plan to install with the cam.

What all should I do? trunnion upgrade? Valve springs? Cam suggestions?

Also plan to replace oil pump and timing chain.

Long tube headers if you want the most out of the the heads/cam.

Looking At those now! Not sure if I want to do speed engineering and deal with the X pipe or pony up for something more expensive and direct bolt in. I'm leaning towards skipping the cam for now and just swapping in a 2 piece timing cover for access at a later date without pulling the damper again.

So you are going to change the timing cover and put on a set of 243s, but not do the cam. That logic is lost on me.

mainly concerned about driveability after the cam not really looking to pull the whole drivetrain right now as most cams are recommending replacing the stall to a 2800-3200 stall.

Although I'm new to the platform, biggest mistake I see is enthusiast go with too big a cam. Most could use a "Truck Norris" style cam on the street and be better off.

I guess I had overlooked the truck norris! That may be the ticket! I'll give BTR a call tomorrow

What are the drivability concerns with an automatic transmission?

This is what my balancer looked like when it came out - the timing cover seal had cut a serious groove into it and I was leaking some oil. Replacing the seal might be a good idea...

The problem my A4 car has. Big cam, no stall converter. All of that points out basically an unfinished project - that I’m finishing. OP is concerned about drivability, but a good custom grind cam made to his setup (stock a4), is what I’d recommend when he installs the 243 heads. Mine is "stage 3" (subjective due to sheer amount of grind specs in just the "stage 3" cam world.) Without a cam change, I’d just save those 243’s for a different project, go with exhaust, tune, and cruise the boulevard.

The 243’s on mine are combustion chamber and heads surfaced for max compression on 93, CNC ported, with Newton Epoch valve job, dual spring kit with Ti retainers, chromoly spring locators, Viton seals, etc., Manley pushrods, with LS7 lifters. For timing chain, Cloyes Z chain, Katech chain damper, GM mls head gaskets, NGK TR6 plugs, etc., header gaskets are Rimflex. The oil pump, and all the rest, I’d need to look through the invoices. It’s pretty bad when I can’t recall the mods. lol! That’s just one example of many with 243’s. If I were doing what you’re doing, I’d jump on the phone with Summit Racing (considering the car is apart now, and you’d need an in stock cam. I didn’t think of that earlier…) Nonetheless, they may have a really good cam, chain, etc., for this build, which would work well in unison with your 243’s, and make this project go well.
