Competition mode ?
I'm sure you wanted somebody with more experience in the subject, but I'm just trying to help since nobody replied.

I can add that if you attempt to spin tires with traction control on the computer assumes this is not the desired reaction the drivers is looking for. To "help the driver out" the computer performs some perfomance modifications thus reducing power and reconciling the spinning tires situation.
Competetive mode indicates to the computer that you are indeed using the car in a manner that may cause tire spinning and you do not want the computer to interfere.
Active handling is a different system and can be either totally turned off or totally left on.
Competetive mode is used mainly for drag racing although many here run in Competetive mode all of the time.
Others have either managed on their own or have bought aftermarket modifications that automatically put there cars in competetive mode upon start up.
At the drag strip there are at least two schools of thought regarding active handling/traction control and competetive mode.
I believe all would agree that traction control has to be turned off at the drag strip.
Some believe that active handling should also be turned off and do so when racing.
I personally believe in the active handling system and would not want to take a chance on turning it off and eliminating the chance it could save my butt someday.
Just my .02 worth.

I will add, however, that with active handling on and traction control off, you can sometimes create a condition where the car is fighting against the acceleration. By this I am referring to rear-end getting loose out of turns or during flat out acceleration with wheel spin. When either of these occurs, the system senses that the car is out of control and will apply specific breaks to try and correct -- obviously a resistance to acceleration, but it can save your arss from time to time.
