I have a 2002 couple born 6/3/02. Last October, my HUD remained blank for the first five minutes of a Saturday morning drive. Without any assistance from me, is suddenly started working again. Until yesterday, it has worked flawlessly.
Yesterday, it blanked out on the 5 mile drive home from work. This morning, it remained blank when I started the car, but suddenly started working about halfway to work.
Has anyone experienced this before? Does anyone that has actually opened up the HUD to integrate a radar detector or other device have ideas about whether this might be caused by a connector that has come loose between the HUD and the guage cluster, or the HUD and power from the battery?
The car is certainly still under warranty, but since the HUD is working now, and I can't predict when it will quit working again, I suspect that the Chevy dealer won't be much help. Any additional info I can gather before talking to the Chevy service department can only help.
I had the exact same problem with a 2001 Grand Prix GTP. Also, every once in a while it would just dim to the point where I could not read the display with sunglasses on, and then suddenly, it would brighten up (no change in ambient light). Every time I took it into service, it worked, then one day, when coming back from lunch it went out directly in front of a Pontiac dealer. I shot in, had the service manager take a look, he immediately ordered me one.
The new one fixed the problem.
Later, I found out this is quite common with HUD units used on GTPs.
