I just got it put it yesterday along with a trans go and a B&M cooler. My temp in city driving is getting up to 225 degrees. That't the highest I saw it. My question is, What is the normal temp that it should be running at? Thanks
Your going to get a higher temp with this convertor especially during city driving due to the slippage. I wouldn't worry about 225. The C5 has a built in high temp warning for the transmission. Of course the lower the tranny temp the longer it lasts but 225 isn't that high.
Should I maybe get a bigger cooler or just leave it how it is? I knew it was going to get a little warmer but I guess I thought the cooler would keep it around the same range as before. Thanks
I usually run between 185-195 deg. in the middle of summer here in DFW area, but I can only remember one time it went over 200 and that was in a 40 mile stop and go trip in mid August.
Being in Abilene, I would imagine you are somewhat cooler than here in Dallas now and over 200 is not normal, at least in my driving experience. A bigger cooler would not hurt, especially if that is what your tranny is seeing now in temps.
Turning on your cooling fans at a lower than stock setting would probably help alot. The cooler doesn't do much in city driving because of the lack of air going thru it, thats where your cooling fans come in, to help your cooler, thats where I would start. My first fan comes on at 199 & off at 190, the 2nd fan comes on at 209 & off at 200. The stock #s are first fan on at 229 & off at 222, the 2nd is 239 & 230. If I was to have further cooling problems I would change my thermostat to something less then the stock 195*, hope this helps. BTW I used the LS1 Edit to set my fans.
Something is not right. That is way to high. Have the installer recheck the fluid level. Probably a dumb question, but did he install the cooler in dry? I always fill the cooler to it's capacity before I install it. Just a thought.
Good luck,
Mike :)
That is HIGH. On my ST3500 I was around 185. I also had a manual fan switch to turn on the high speed fan whenever I wanted. That helped. I also used the BM cooling.
Those numbers are high but when you first install a converter they run a little warmer as clutches break end .A lower thermo. 178 and Fans programmed to come on at 184degrees will help.Ihave the SY4000 and my temp in 90+ weather was 178 to 186 on the hwy ,and 170+ in city. When I race it gets up too 194.I have the B&M cooler also. Make sure the Tranny isn't slipping because this will create more Heat, also check Fluid level. :iagree:
I'm going to get the fluid checked this morning. I have a pretty good feeling that that is the cause of the high temps. It feels like it slips into nuetral too, which also leads me to believe that my fluid is low. If this doesn't work I may go to a bigger cooler. We put the cooler in dry and I'm guessing right now that it sucked up more fluid then we had originally thought it would. I will keep you posted. As far as how it feels . I love this thing.
Here's another question though. What tires are you running with a stock rear end? I was thinking about ET Streets since it's not my daily drive but I worry about the half shafts and output shafts. I don't know how well drag radials would hold.
Well I went to get some ATF added and see how that worked. That was my problem. It hardly gets over 190 now in light to light driving and shifts a whole lot better. It also does not slip any more. Needless to say I am completely happy now. Now I just have to get some tires and head to the track. :D
I do remember now that when I put my cooler in, I tried to charge it like you do a new oil filter, but I spilled more than what it was worth. I went ahead and put the car up on the lift and checked it that way. It was low, although not by a quart, but it did take more than what I thought.
Drag Radials will work fine. I use them with set up,SY4000 and cutlow 1.60s to my best of 1.58. ET streets are better with more POWER output. I see cars and Race cars that can't cut 1.70s with ET streets. DO a 4-6sec burn out with BFGs & 6-8sec with Nittos and they will hook on most tracks. :iagree:

Re: Yank ST3500 temp? (LittleBoyBlu99)
Mine has been up to 240 in 110 degree heat in stop and go traffic, with a SY 3500, and a tranny cooler!!!
My stock trans just died on me, now I probably know why.
