Default New tech tip - loud Climate Control blower (moderators - please post to TT section)

When you turn on your Climate Control, is it somewhat loud? Any unnatural sounds - you just need to clean the system blower out. This took me just under an hour the first time, and when I helped my buddy do it (my second time), we did it in about 20 minutes. Here is how:

1. On the passenger side foot well, there is a cover right above your feet. Remove the cover by pulling out two push tabs that are lined up against the glove box, and then angle it out.

2. Locate the blower motor - if you are upside down in the foot well, looking up, the blower motor is on the left side, closest to the center console. It looks like a big motor with a styrofoam wrapper around the base.
3. First thing you have to do is remove a plastic vent that is in the way. If you feel around on it, you will eventually find two tabs, and then it just pops off. One of the tabs is hidden on the top of the vent, the other is hidden on the side facing the back of the car. You may need a small flathead screw driver to pry the tabs up.

4. Next, unplug the power connector to the motor, and unhook the rubber tube by pulling it out (on newer model, you also need to "un-rubber-band" it from around the motor). To unplug the electrical wire, there is a tab on the top side of it that you need to unfasten. Sqeeze the back part of the tab (closer to the wire itself) and the front side of the tab (closer to the blower motor) will lift up. When the tab is in the up position, you can simply pull the plug off.

5. After that, you just remove 3 torx screws (size is T20) and the whole unit drops straight out. If there is anything in the unit, it will be very obvious once you pull it out. You will not need to pull the plastic blower impeller apart from the motor.
