I am having GHL's and Magnaflow x-pipe installed friday :D . I read some previous posts about installing aftermarket exhausts and several people had problems with the clamps becoming loose and having to re-align the the tips after a few days. Others just tack welded the exhaust. Any thoughs on doing the tack weld or are the clamps good enough on the GHLs.
I have the GHL system with one clamp that never liked to hold well...In my attempt to (over)tighten it, I stripped the threads on it. Now I'm constantly kicking the passenger side tips back down into alignment until I get it back on the lift to tack weld all the joints.
One small tack on each joint should do it, and if you ever need to remove the system, will be simple to grind off.
I had EXACTLY the same problem that you did. I used some 2 1/2" muffler clamps instead of the flimsy clamps that come w/ the GHL's. I stripped one of them, as well. After fighting with the clamps for several hours with no real progress on getting the exhaust aligned (and tightened), I went to NAPA and got the problem solved.
I've got some stainless Corsa clamps that I'm going to put on, as they are a little more 'stealth' than the clamps I've got on there now. However, from the back or side of the car, you can't see the clamps at all, and the exhaust is tight as a ****.
Thanks for the reply's. Think I'll get some 2 1/2" clamps to use. Anxious for them to be delievered, got a deal I couldnt pass up on a set of the 3 1/2 bullseyes and havent seen them before, so hopeing I like them.
I used the clamps only when I installed my system because I knew I was going to change to the 4" tips when they came available. The clamps held fine. Since I swapped out the tips, the clamps are still holding them tight...no slippage at all.
