what causes and how can one prevent the pull key and wait 10 seconds message. It is becoming quite frequent and annoying to have to cycle the ignition a few times to clear this and the service column message before being able to drive. (note my column never locks had dealer bypass)
Re: How to prevent "pull key message" ? (lostsoulny)
Any chance your key and/or ignition slot is dirty? The pull key message will appear if the resistor built into your key cannot be read correctly, and dirt could potentially cause that problem.
Re: How to prevent "pull key message" ? (lostsoulny)
:withstupid: The Pull Key message is likely due to a problem reading the resistor pellet on the key. Some people have used a small pipe cleaner or similar with some alcohol to clean out the ignition key hole contacts.
The Service Column (Lock?) message may be a different issue, since I believe you get that when the BCM doe not get all the correct signals from the column lock that it expected. Even though the dealer performed the upgrades, the column lock is still a POS. See what happens after you correct he first problem.
Re: How to prevent "pull key message" ? (JC in XTC5)
i cleaned it with a q-tip with alcohol (which didnt go in very far) also tried a diff key. it is strange because it only happens if the car has sat for several hours. if it is warm it starts fine with no errors. also the serviec coulumn only comes after i get the pull key the previous ignition cyclce and at no time does the column lock and no codes register in history  :chevy
Re: How to prevent "pull key message" ? (lostsoulny)
It is possible that you could need a new ignition switch if it isn't reading your keys right or is intermittent. Was it working fine before the dealer installed the bypass?
Re: How to prevent "pull key message" ? (shafman1)
it just started happening this winter when the car sat for periods of 1 or 2 weeks without being driven. I just put in a new battery and even reprogrammed it to stock with my hypertech thinking maybe it wasn't getting enough power to send the right signal. it only happens when the car has sat for more than 2 hours it seems. i get pull key, try again get service column, let car idle for a min, turn off hit reset , restart car and all is fine no messages  I can stop and start car for short periods with no problem at all, wacky isn't it ? ohh and yes was fine after the dealer performed bypass, that was years ago, although i did receive the intermittent column message. ohh i also tried the pull fuse method as well.
Re: How to prevent "pull key message" ? (lostsoulny)
There's a TSB out for faulty ignition switches. I had mine replaced under it.
I can't find my copy, sorry but the dealer should be able to look it up for you. There's a sliding plastic actuator that supposed to slide with the key insertion. It gets jammed sometimes and thinks the key is in when it's not. This is when you get the pull key message. The car thinks there is a key in the ingnition because the actuator is stuck and there is no read on the resistor pellet. It assumes it's the wrong key and tells you to pull it.
Next time it happens open the driver door and if the car making a ringing sound and the key is not in the ignition you then know that you have a faulty switch. If you get stuck somewhere, take a small plastic wire tie and fish around in the ignition and you can almost always coax the actuator to release.
Manny, I spoke to a knowledgable vette mechanic today and he basically said what you did. that the recall prevents it from locking but still allows the pin to move it is just blocked by a plate. so i am at a wait and see point, things might resolve themselves now that I can start driving it daily, if not I can try to get GM to cover the repair again or just get the bypass and be done with it. The good news is that I don't get stuck at least, it is just a minor inconvinece that will hopefully clear up. thanks everyone for the help!
Re: How to prevent "pull key message" ? (blackjack)
BlackJack I will see if the ignition pings without the key I don't think it does though so that may not be my problem I have a feeling it just isnt fully releasing enough to send the code to the BCM ? yet after an ignition cycle it does  I hope once I start driving it, it just goes away for the most part
