Surfing EBay late at night can be hell on my pocketbook! I found an auction for a brake upgrade for C5 vettes that look interesting to say the least. However I don't ever remember seeing this type of kit anywhere. The write-up is huge but the guy doesn't ramble on…just states his opinions. Seems like good reading if nothing else. I'm considering this kit as a gift for a friend. I know he has had some brake problems with his stock rotors bluing and beginning to hairline crack. What does everyone else think? The link is below:
Interesting. Not sure I would buy something like this without some independent testaments to the quality. Certainly 1 of the 10 people that he lent the products to is a CF member.
Anyone testify to the quality?
Still, thanks for pointing this out! I am looking to improve my braking ability without going to a big-brake setup.
I can't look at ebay on a govt. puter, can someone post a pic or give me some name brands. I talked the US rep for Movit brakes, he is selling his last kit on ebay, if it is the Movit/porsche/brembo kit then it is one of the best.
Sorry it’s not first hand experience but my friend was one of the testers of this kit. Great looking setup. I wasn’t sure how to take the approach of a stock sized rotor but with all the abuse it went through and not a single problem I would buy it!
As far as better performance for track use these would offer no advantage over stock rotors except for they would be lighter. The problem with the stock setup is the calipers creating two problems. First they get hot and transfer the heat into the brake fluid and boil the fluid. Second they taper the pads severly on extreme use. I had no problems with my stock rotors on extreme use. They never cracked or warped.
I talked to the guy selling these on Ebay in great detail, very informative. I looked at the electro website. From my calculations it would cost $914.00 to buy this kit from them, and that doesn't include shipping. Something also tells me for the $33.00 they charge for rotor assembly they don't go to the extent the guy on EBay goes to, balancing, measuring runout…….etc. Also I noticed the hats on electro is steel not aluminum. I made the decision to bid on the ones on EBay. Based on his feedback I also ordered some Hawk pads and ATE Superblue fluid to complete the package! It's a longgggggggg auction with 7 days to go so keep your fingers crossed for me that I get it.
BUT: What about liability? Modify your engine, it blows up, no big deal. Modify your breaks, they fail, and you may be disabled for the rest of your life. Chevrolet won't take responsibility if your breaks are modified to this extent. Maybe your insurance will refuse coverage if they find out. I wouldn't feel comfortable with a kit like this bought on ebay.
