Thanks to JoeG's expertise and tools, we installed TPIS long tube headers on my '00 coupe. The installation took about 6 hrs. The most time consuming was cutting and welding of the factory H pipe. I really like the sound at WOT. It's noticeably louder and seems to rev quicker than before.
There is SOTP improvement but I am fearing that I have exhaust leak. I have few questions for TPIS experts:
1. How can you test to see if there is an exhaust leak. After the installation, there was smoke emanating from the headers. We are thinking it's the coating...
2. Can you lose HP/Torque with slight exaust leak?
3. We weren't able to do the flange after cutting out about 3" of the factory H pipe. How can we ensure that there is leak free connection w/o using flanges?
4. Can you use some sort of muffler clamps over TPIS H-pipe to the header? Someone told me it would be near impossible to remove the header if we used clamps. We just want to make sure there no leak.
1.) It's JoeyG
2.) If it was a drastic leak, then hp loss would be noticeable.
3.) If anything it's either a pinhole leak in the weld area for the h pipe or a loose O2 sensor/threading.
4.) I'm always listening for suggestions.
5.) Smoke was only noticeable after motor/headers had reached temp, so it didn't seem out of the ordinary at the time.
6.) You were in a hurry to hit the bars so :smash:
7.) I'll fix it when I'm back from Houston this weekend.
I wish I had a JoeyG here in Jackson. I have a set STILL in the box in my living room.
I tell you I think my truck is jealous of the vette. Ever since I got the car my truck has been having "problems" now when it is time to put the headers on my truck decides it needs a new intake manifold gasket. There goes header install money. :mad
After doing some search on this subject, some people have clamped where Hpipe and collector meets. And some have put bearing grease to make it even tighter fit. I will call Chris to get his thoughts.
I really don't know what exhaust leak sounds like but I heard it's like a ticking noise which I do not have. I definitely here more exahust flow noise and I think that's normal.
When I did my install the fit was so frickin tight I didn't need clamps in fact I bought a set from Stainless Works and still have them in the box....no leaks here Thanks TL4095 :D
TPIS told me that the carbon buildup will eventually seal the H-pipe! :D
They did tell me if a leak was still there, to buy some "pookie" and seal up the joint. I never had to do that although I did have to go back in and use a rubber mallet to bang the h-pipe further into the LT's to get a good seal.
