Mean Green. Looks like you got them. Congrats!!!!!!! I am just goign with my 3.42's since I already have them. This will be a tough choice and will depend on how much you will drag race.

Some of the ones I would consider are as follows:

SY3500 1.61 STR for street tires.

or maybe one of the new Yanks:

Converter Comparison: SS3600/3800 vs. Yank's 2 most popular converters

Stall Torque Ratio: The SS3600/3800 is higher than the ST3500 and YPT4000. For the SS3600 it is 2.50. For the SS 3800 it is 2.55. This will make the Super Stock converters feel tighter driving around town and will enhance drivability for cars running less gear (such as 2.73 and 3.23 gears). This will also hit the tires much harder at the starting line, a real plus for those running sticky tires.

Efficiency: The SS3600/3800 is within 1% of efficiency of the ST3500 and YPT4000 in the 5000+ rpm range and exceeds them both in the 2500-4500 range.

Shift extension: The SS3600 has 4700-4800 rpm shift extension. The SS3800 has 4900-5000 rpm shift extension. This compares to the ST3500 shift extension of 4800-4900 rpms and the YPT4000 of 5500-5600 rpms. Bottom line: for cars with less gear, smaller cams or power adders such as nitrous oxide, less shift extension can be better. For maximum ET and mph running naturally aspirated, choose a converter with more shift extension.

Mike told me if I were running 3.73's and dr's to get the SS3800 if not then the SY3500.

The Bandit......................

Vince,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,sticking with a Mod for more than 3 months???? Never..................................

I have the $$ now and will order my TC next week for sure. I already talked to the person I am ordering it from. I am leaning toward the SS3600 and runnign the 18' Nittos all the time. I have 8,300 miles on my car in 24 months so i think I can get away with it. However, the safe SY3500 with street tires keeps popping in my head. I am worried a non-dragster like me may be going over board? But I would rather have too much and not use it (ie. don't press the pedal to the floor), than want MORE and have no more floor to push the pedal to

I have driven the SY3500 a few times and though it is a great converter, it doesn't have the HIT I had hoped for. So many people love this TC though, so maybe I was crazy or maybe it was because I just drove the cars for a short period.

I am just going to order it and be happy with my decision. Worst Case would be I HATE teh TC and I have to take it out, sell it, and pay for another install. That is not fun, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. :jester

Good Luck MG!

ST3500 has a 2.4 STR (Stall Torque Ratio) and is for a car that will have sticky tires, like drag radials. The SY3500 has an str of 1.61 which is ideal for street tires.

The SY hits a lot softer, but has a higher efficiency than the ST3500 which hits much harder off the line, but the efficiency is a little less than the SY3500.

Again the key is the tires. you could run street Tires with an ST3500, but traction would be hard to get if you punched the gas pedal down hard, you would have to use some right foot constraint. Mitch C has the ST3500 and so did Gary Brown. Oh Ya, the ST3500 with a 2.4 STR or any high STR torque converter will increase driveability and make your car feel tighter than a lower str converter.

Very good information, Thanks.. Do you think that a 3500 stall speed would be too much for a daily driven car with a 3.42 ratio and only an occasional trip to the track ?

The STR is 2.5 for the ST-3500

Al,

The Yank Web-Site says this for the ST3500. Where are you getting 2.25?

C-5 SUPER THRUSTER 3500 (245mm high efficiency, hard hitting launch, 3500 stall, 2.40 STR) $895

Take Care :D
