I know we have seen this before, but how about just for me. I have a 00 6sp convt with the following; vortex rammer, Z06 intake, B&B shorties, bassini X pipe, B&B exhaust, 3:73 gears and Z06 wheels and tires. The last dyno pull was 326 hp and 336 tq. If I buy a Mag S/C I will spend the following, $5,500 for the unit, $1500 for a painted hood, and $900 for tune and install. $8,000, for that I will get probably 80 plus HP and TQ or somewhere around 400 to the ground. The question is, could I get more HP and TQ with an heads and cam pkg and keep the same driveability or maybe even more.I need some input, I'm ready to make a move. mlewis@gbf-inc.com 800 338-4168 ext 316 Thanks, Mike :blueangel:
Now, this is IMOP, but the S/C would preserve driveability over the H/C package but it would make sense to do the H/C swap as well in order to get the most out of the package. If you want to preserve stock driveability but have the power too then nitrous is the cost effective solution. There just isn't cheaper horsepower. "Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer choice".
This is a question every one asks. What to do? You really have to look at how much you want to spend. You say this Mag S/C gave you 400RWHP for 8K done. Some head and cam packages that are really nice street drives get 400-430RWHP for anywhere 5-8k it all depends on how you go with and if your doing the work your self or having them do it. Have you looked at turbo charging? I know Cerra racing makes a kit for 6500.00 and 1200.00 to install ready to go out the door. On a bone stock LS1 they get 430RWHP and 470RWTQ, but if you add exhaust you get an extra 15-20RWHP. That cost 7700.00 done, with that you can also put a boost controller and set the boost for 5 for daily driving and 7-9 for when you want the power. If I was you I would call around and ask the shops and ask them how it handles. I know if you go to some shops they will even let you take out a done car and see if you like it. Cerra did if for me. Also a good idea is to look at what other members of corvetteforum have and ask them how they like it and what would they do if they had the money to do it over. Good luck. I’m going with an aggressive H/C first my self, the next car I’ll twin turbo.
thanks for the input, my problem is 2 fold. No tuners around here at all, and I no of no cars around here with either of the 2 choices. So back to the question; spend the money for the Mag or can I buy 400+ rwhp and tq for $5,000 or less? Any good packages out there. I'm also afraid that with the H/C set-up and no tuner around, if something needs tweeking I'll be out of luck!! :chevy :blueangel:
With an H/C setup, once it is installed and dialed in properly, it should be virtually as reliable as stock. However, with the forced induction setups, there is more that can go amiss as time goes by. Put simply, the more complicated something is, the greater possibility something can break. Just my .02.
I had a mild H/C package installed in mid January and have been very pleased with the results.
Some people are leary about H/C as it's opening up the block and they feel that it affects the reliability. They will argue that a S/C package is better as less "intrusive" and reliability is greater.
I would disagree with that line of thinking. As long as the work is done by a reliable/compentant shop and tunning is done properly, the H/C is very reliable.
IMO, FI is more involved as tunning is critical. I have a Z3 which is S/C'ed and I've been having issues with software and AFR issues.
Another point to consider, a nice H/C package will compliment a S/C application nicely and just adds to the performance increase. I'm considering adding the ATI to my setup :reddevil
And to answer your last question, yes, a H/C can provide in excess of 400rwhp/rwtq. Just depends on your transmission and your approach (mild to wild). For an A4 with LT headers and a 224/224 114LSA cam and Stg. 1 heads the average seems to be around 370rwhp and 380rwtq. To get over the magical 400 mark I think a more aggressive cam would be required.

Big Lew, sorry it rained on the dyno day a few weeks back. More Performance sends the pcms out to Ed Wright and I have had no issues with my h/c, ATI, LT header set up other than smoking the runflats so I can upgrade wheels and tires and maybe some brembos. Charlotte is an hour-hour and a half away. If your still on the fence, come by and be convinced by my beast I love to roll up beside a GTS or maybe a 911tt and watch them smirk-----until I let it rip :D

i have an MN6, and opted for a Stage 1 H/C (224/224 114 cam)and the basic boltons, and got the following numbers with (check sig). A gain of about 80 rwhp and 50 rwtq with full exhaust, stock cats, stock intake manifold.
going to be adding an LS6 intake manifold and possibly a pulley, and looking to be over 400rwhp
