I'm probably gona see if i can fabricate my own, but was wondering if you guys notice any difference? It would seem that any improved airflow would be benefical. I hove no idea how these stock set-ups breath. :(

I installed GM Z06 screens with Velcro after "opening up" the stock foglight surrounds. I didn't get much SOTP effect, frankly, nothing like I got with the Z06 airbox/K&N setup. I think it's got to be hard to notice a few HP increase when you start with 350-405 at the crank.

It may be as it warms up I'll notice less loss of power on the hot days. . .

But they look great.

Phil,

It was not worth the effort and cost of buy getting new cold air screens. I used my trusty old dremel and cut out a 1.5" by 3.5" hole (guessimating) and made custom metal screens.

I don't think there is much HP gain, but my car breathessssss way more effortlessly. BTW, I have a modified stock airbox lid with a K&N on board, so the air intake from these new sources are working for sure because my car's idle is about 700-800 now, instead of 1k.

I will take pics if you are interested in what I did.

Hope this helps,
Eddie :auto:

Ho Phil,
Performace SOTP no.
However, before I installed the screens the front bumper cover could be warm to the touch. This warmth is no longer there.

no performance difference at all - I just painted the cold air screens white for cosmetic reasons. :seeya :seeya

I've been looking at stainless steel screen material (like what is used on the Z06), and there is going to be a 25%-50% loss in air flow just due to the surface area the wire mesh takes up. If you want maximum air flow, just dremel out the black plastic. If you want looks, go for the screens and dremel the plastic if you so choose.

Thanks for all the replys. I'm still undecided. I may just go the dremel route.

I was going to do this on my '97. But once I had them out, I just decided to leave them out. You can't tell unless you get down on the ground and look, plus you have the whole opening for the air to pass through. All you have to do then is hook the fog lights back up. You can always get the Z06 screens to cover the openings too.

One member did a test, where he hooked up thermocouples in the area around the airbox, with and without the openings, open. He found a huge temp drop with the screens open. So, you don't necessarily need the screens, but open the area up to cool inlet charge. Cool air = more HP... Then take the factory lid away off your airbox and replace it with some wireties and make even more power... The gain for me from a 2002 Z06 airbox lid, to no lid was a gain of 15hp and 11lb/ft torque with no lid in place.

EDIT: Never mind I see you already have your box open... Now just open up the front...

Where does the stock air filter, or Blackwing get its air from before any Modding? Surely some fresh air is moving through the engine compartment and filter area anyway. If some new fresh air did not come in somehow, the engine would starve and die from lack of O2!
TeamnZR1 posted that he did temperature mapping of the engine bay and found no temp. decrease when opening that area up. I saw a post years ago where it was said the air temperature near the filter goes to near ambient once moving at 30mph anyway.
So why then does the Z06 have this open? Is it for additional engine and accessory cooling, not for cold air filter air, perhaps?
