Default Re: Battery Question (Stilcrazee)

Same kinda thing happened to me with my 98. I replaced the original in Sept last year, with a Red top, only cause I didn't want it to leak (car has 7000 miles on it) Put it away for storage and 5 weeks into winter it was dead. I took it out and put it on a timer/trickle charger. Has been ok since I put it back in 5 weeks ago. I did notice that before starting the voutage on DIC was as low as 10.9. For some reason they don't seem to hold as strong a charge as the lead cells.
Unless you have a Deep Cycle battery (like a yellow top), it's never a good idea to let a battery completely discharge. Completely discharging a starter battery will at the very least reduce it's capacity and at the worse damage it permanently.

Either disconnect it or put a tender on it if you are going to leave it sit for more than a couple weeks.

I even managed to kill a yellow top by letting it sit too long one too many times. I do have a battery tender, but sometimes forget to use it and let the car sit too long. The yellowtop did recover several times, but after 2.5 years it finally died for good. I called THE LAPD and Optima. The warranty is only 1 year from THE LAPD. I called Optima and they give 1 year full replacement and 1 year pro-rated. Optima recommended a redtop instead for SLI purposes. I bought this redtop at Autozone. 6 year pro-rated warranty on the redtop. I now have redtops in 2 out of 4 of my cars. I figure if it dies I am better off as far as the warranty that I ever was with the yellowtop.
